Roads on the island are steep, but the main roads are paved and in good condition. Side roads leading to several of the finest rental villas on the island are unpaved and rough, so renting a 4-wheel drive vehicle on St. Thomas is recommended at a few of the rental villas. St. Thomas is a U.S. territory and U.S. citizens don't need a passport to enter, but you will need to show proof of citizenship. Everyone departing St. Thomas and St. John, even Americans, are now required by U.S. Immigration to show either a passport or a certified copy of a birth certificate accompanied by a photo ID. Please don't forget these for the whole family! In addition, most U.S. cell phones work in St. Thomas, U.S. currency is used, and your hair dryer won't even need a converter.
